May I value things in relation to eternity.

Choices

[Help me] to deem it an honour to be employed by thee
as an instrument in thy hands,
ready to seize every opportunity of usefulness,
and willing to offer all my talents to thy service.


All thy work for me is perfect,
and I praise thee.

The Infinite and the Finite

Let me live a life of self-distrust,
dependence on Thyself,
mortification,
crucifixion,
prayer.

Weaknesses

I request only to see the face of him I love,
to be content with bread to eat,
with raiment to put on,
if I can be brought to thy house in peace.

Need of Jesus

I was a stranger, an outcast, a slave, a rebel,
but thy cross has brought me near,
has softened my heart,
has made me thy Father's child,
has admitted me to thy family,
has made me joint-heir with thyself.

Peril

Thy never-failing providence orders every event,
sweetens every fear,
reveals evil's presence lurking in seeming good,
brings real good out of seeming evil,
makes unsatisfactory what I set my heart upon,
to show me what a short-sighted creature I am,
and to teach men to live by faith upon
thy blessed self.

Conflict

Teach me to look to Jesus in His cross,
and so to know sin's loathsomeness in thy sight

And my holiness be the atmosphere
in which I live.

Need of Grace

O that all my distresses and apprehensions
might prove but Christ's school
to make me fit for greater service
by teaching me the great lessons of humility.

Reliance

...to make the creature [the flesh] something is to make it stand between thee and me, so that I do not walk humbly and holily.

New Beginning

Enable me to remember that blood which cleanseth all sin,
to believe in that grace that subdues all iniquities,
to resign myself to that agency which can deliver me from the bondage of corruption
into the glorious liberty of the sons of God.
